Job Purpose
  • To provide specialized critical care to infants and children in the Paediatric ICU (PICU), ensuring safe, coordinated, and high-quality care in a multidisciplinary setting.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead evidence-based management of critically ill paediatric patients in PICU and support emergency responses hospital-wide.
  • Perform advanced airway management, ventilation strategies, and hemodynamic monitoring/interventions.
  • Coordinate care with paediatric subspecialists, anaesthesia, surgery, and nursing to optimize outcomes.
  • Establish and enforce infection prevention, sedation/analgesia, and patient safety protocols.
  • Support step-up/step-down pathways and timely referrals/transfer where appropriate.
  • Participate in morbidity & mortality reviews, audits, and quality improvement projects.
  • Teach and mentor clinicians rotating through critical care and contribute to PICU training.
  • Engage in research and data-driven service development for paediatric critical care.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from an institution recognized by KMPDC.
  • MMed in Paediatrics and Child Health or equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by KMPDC.
  • Fellowship/sub-specialty training in Paediatric Critical Care/Intensive Care or equivalent from an institution recognized by KMPDC.
  • Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  • Recognition as a specialist/sub-specialist by KMPDC.
  • Retention in the KMPDC register.
  • Valid Practice License from KMPDC.
  • Valid Indemnity Cover.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
  • Compliance with Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.
