- Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating individual programs of care for patients in the pre-operative environment.
- Providing timely, skilled effective assistance as a member of the theatre team, in accordance with theatre policies and procedures, rotating through the roles like anesthetic nurse, anesthetic out-reaches, circulating, scrub, and recovery specialties.
- Co-operating with other departments/hospitals to ensure the safe transfer of patients to and from department.
- Ensuring that accurate and legible nursing records are maintained and ensure their safekeeping, while ensuring that confidentiality is maintained at all times.
- Providing accurate and timely collection and submission of appropriate theatre reports, using HMIS.
- Ensuring that procedures are understood by staff and carried out according to established practices, standards and policies.
- Participating in the mentoring, supervision, teaching and appropriate assessment of new staff within the department.
- Contributing to the development of training programs within the department in conjunction with other team members. Provide feedback from in-house/external training courses in order to disseminate knowledge.
- Developing good interpersonal relationships with patients, relatives and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Ensuring the Health and Safety of all staff, parties and visitors is maintained by reporting all incidents, accidents and near misses and documenting them appropriately.
- Ensuring the safe use of all equipment within the department policy with regard to staff training on same.
- Ensuring proper operation of medical and administrative equipment by verifying emergency equipment availability, completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer's instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, maintaining equipment inventories and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
- Maintaining nursing supplies inventory by studying usage reports, identifying trends, anticipating needed supplies, approving requisitions and cost allocations.
- Developing written standards of care and conduct department audits which allow the effectiveness of nursing to be evaluated. Where deficits in standards of care are highlighted, take appropriate remedial action.
- Have an understanding of risk management process and participate, when necessary, in the identification and analysis of risk.
- Ensuring that staff undertake Continuous Professional Development including keeping abreast of changes and developments in nursing and take every opportunity to maintain and improve professional knowledge and competence.
- Comply with all policies and procedures relating to maintenance and servicing of equipment according to manufacturer's instructions and that all staff using the equipment are trained and competent to do so. You may however be required to do other duties as may be directed by the management.
- Diploma or Degree in Nursing
- Higher Diploma in Perioperative/ Theatre Nursing
- Registration by the Nursing Council of Kenya
- Valid practicing license as a Perioperative/Theatre Nurse from the Nursing Council of Kenya
- At least 2-5 years' experience in the same position
- BLS/ACLS Certification
- Computer Proficiency
- Personal Attribute: Teamwork, Leadership skills and Strong Clinical judgement are highly valued in Charge Nurse role
