THE ROLE:
  • As a laboratory technician, the candidate will play a crucial role in the Coffee Berry Borer project by supporting scientists in the research, development, and analysis of the pest and its natural enemies in Kenya. Key tasks will involve mass rearing of coffee berry borer (CBB) and its parasitoids within laboratory settings and carrying out assigned experiments. The candidate will also undertake assigned field activities in line with the role. The candidate should be detail-oriented, methodical, and possess strong technical skills necessary for conducting experiments and maintaining laboratory cultures. The candidate should possess a good understanding of insect biology and behaviour, coupled with excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Key Accountabilities:
  • Undertake field collections of CBB and the three parasitoids from identified counties in Kenya.
  • Rear and maintain the colonies of CBB following standard protocols.
  • Rear and maintain colonies of the three CBB parasitoids: Prorops nasuta, Cephalonomia stephanoderis, and Phymastichus coffeea at the rearing facility following standard protocols;
  • Collect and record data for scientific research and maintaining a proper data retrieval system.
  • Generate reports for both internal and external use.
  • Ensure that laboratories are clean and well maintained.
  • Participate in the training of interns and students on attachment.
ABOUT YOU:
  • A bachelor's degree in entomology, biology, agriculture, or a related field from a recognized University. This may be waived if the candidate is a diploma holder from a technical college, but with specific experience rearing CBB and any of its parasitoids.
  • Previous experience in insect rearing including pest hosts and their parasitoids through internships, research projects, or employment.
  • A candidate with demonstrated experience rearing CBB or any of its parasitoids will have an added advantage.
  • Fluency in English and at least one local language, preferably Swahili with excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • A team player with the ability to maintain a harmonious working relationship with colleagues.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities to troubleshoot issues related to insect health, and colony management.
  • Clear and effective communication skills to collaborate with researchers, colleagues, and supervisors.
