
Legal Officer at The Kenyan Alliance Insurance

- Control of matters under litigation in liaison with external advocates.
- Ensure the standards of legal representation by the panel of law firms is in accordance with company SLAs and best practice
- Keep a record/report of all matters under litigation and recoveries
- Determine the applicability of cover to each third-party claim notification received by the legal officer and take appropriate action on the claim.
- Study judgment notifications and determine appropriate response to each, and act within stay of execution timelines with appropriate advice to the company.
- Participate in the appointment and vetting of service providers.
- Manage the recovery of outlay from negligent third parties.
- Negotiate amicably, out of court settlements for genuine claims.
- Authorize payment of decretal or negotiated sums before expiry of stay of execution.
- Assign debt collection matters to law firms in liaison with the finance department and pursue progress to completion.
- Attend court as an officer of the court and submit testimony in defence of the company decisions
- Organize and brief witnesses in execution of affidavits, witness statements and trial preparations.
- Ensure payment of service provider fees within the set performance benchmarks.
- Conduct legal research and preparing legal opinions to both external and internal clients.
- Draw, vet, and review legal instruments and/or documents as may be required by management from time to time.
- Advise management on changing trends in management of legal claims.
- Facilitate and /or respond to any correspondence and/or enquiries regarding claims legal issues.
- Maintain adequate reserves for legal claims.
- Bachelor of Laws degree from recognized university
- At least 3 years' experience in the insurance industry
- Excellent working Knowledge of Insurance law and practice.
- Time management skills and attention to details
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Resilience to maintain effective work behaviour in the face of setbacks or pressure.
- High standards of personal integrity, ability to work with minimum supervision
- Good communication skills (oral & written)
- Excellent negotiation and problem-solving skills
- Good working relationships within the legal industry
