  • Within delegated authority, the land expert will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Lead a detailed diagnostic of formal, informal, and customary land tenure systems in Busia (Kenya and Uganda sides), with specific focus on barriers faced by informal women and youth traders
  • Analyse existing land-related laws, policies, and institutional frameworks in both countries and identify gaps, overlaps, and opportunities for cross-border harmonization
  • Guide the design and rollout of participatory land tenure mapping exercises, ensuring representation and validation by women, youth, local leaders, and customary landowners
  • Coordinate the development and piloting of a fit-for-purpose land information system (LIS), tailored to cross-border, informal, and gender-sensitive land recording needs
  • Provide technical assistance to integrate land and property data into the spatial economic development framework and local planning systems
  • Support land dispute identification and management mechanisms, and advise on community-led land conflict resolution approaches
  • Facilitate development of local by-laws, agreements, and protocols on tenure recognition and land use that align with both national and community systems
  • Deliver targeted training and mentorship for local government officers, land boards, survey teams, and community land actors on land governance, participatory tools, and LIS management
  • Collaborate with legal and gender experts to ensure all land interventions reflect inclusive, pro-poor, and gender-equitable principles
  • Develop knowledge products including policy briefs, case studies, and technical guidance notes based on project findings and pilot experiences
  • Contribute to the visibility and dissemination of land-related innovations, tools, and lessons from the project through technical briefs, public presentations, stakeholder workshops, and engagement with national and regional platforms
Qualifications/special skills
  • Advanced degree in Land Administration, Urban or Regional Planning, Geomatics, Geography, Law, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Minimum 7 years of professional experience in land governance, tenure reform, or land information systems in Africa is required.
  • Proven experience working with local governments, informal communities, and cross-sector stakeholders on land governance, planning, or tenure security initiatives is required.
  • Familiarity with gender-responsive land governance principles, including tools that promote women's land rights and participation is an added advantage. Prior experience working with UN agencies or similar multilateral institutions is an advantage.
Sustainable Housing ExpertRESPONSIBILITIES
  • Under the supervision of the Chief, Land Housing and Shelter Section, and together with the RE-Think Buildings Programme team and the relevant country offices, the consultant will carry out the following responsibilities:
  • Review and provide technical inputs to draft Green Building Certification and guidelines, and provide a synopsis of the research for Bangladesh and Senegal
  • Develop a concept for capacity building on the use of local building materials in Ghana to decarbonize the housing and construction sector
  • Contribute to formulating a discussion paper on Sustainable Housing in preparation for the inter-sessional meeting for the Open-Ended Working Group on Adequate Housing
  • Adapt Climate Action Roadmaps and Circularity Assessment to country requirements for implementation by UN-Habitat country teams
  • In consultation with the LHS team and UN-Habitat Regional Offices, draft three (3) concept notes outlining potential projects and initiatives to advance the implementation of key actions identified in the Climate Action Roadmaps for Buildings and Construction in Bangladesh, Ghana, and Senegal.
Qualifications/special skills
  • An advanced university degree (master's or similar) in engineering, architecture, material science, environment-related science, economics, urban management, or other fields related to housing construction and sustainable urban development is required.
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant professional experience, including project drafting and coordinating the implementation of projects is required. Experience in writing analytical texts relating to green buildings, construction materials, housing issues, and urban development issues is desirable.
Exhibition Design Expert ConsultantResponsibility
  • The consultant will conceptualize, design, and oversee the production and setup of the UN-Habitat Pavilion at WUF13, the UN-Habitat shop, and contribute to the design of new integrated spaces as required. Provide branding support and create modular WUF activation booths for key events leading up to WUF13.
Specific assignments
  • Ensure that all work produced follows the highest sustainability standards within the industry.
  • Take part in meetings to identify the communication objectives, theme, key messages, and visual narrative of the exhibition.
  • Take part in workshops and brainstorm sessions with relevant internal stakeholders to identify the features that will be required for various activities at the stand.
  • Conduct site inspections, identify visual requirements, and consult on exhibit design solutions, including budgets and physical exhibition hall limitations.
  • Take part in briefings on the optimal use of the booth as a communication platform for social initiatives, etc.
  • Work with the events management or expo company and other contractors to translate approved designs into compelling visitor experiences by understanding, organizing, and integrating content through prototyping and modelling.
  • Create and propose innovative, on-brand, immersive, highly stylized concepts for the UN-Habitat pavilion.
  • Design all aspects of the pavilion, including but not limited to installation mockups/spatial design, and visual presentation of digital, print, audiovisual exhibition content and lighting solutions.
  • Take part in developing technical specifications for the Pavilion for the event management company or a tendering process, if necessary.
  • Help develop modular WUF13 activation booths to promote the Forum at key events leading up to the WUF13.
  • Create visually arresting representations that speak to the UN-Habitat brand (including but not limited to illustrator drawings, design briefs, elevations, redesigns, and technical drawings).
  • Work with in-house graphic designers for exhibition and branding content by providing design guidelines.
  • Work with other expo and experience designers and architects to ensure cohesion between the UN-Habitat pavilion and other WUF13 integrated spaces in terms of materials, sustainability choices, etc.
  • Develop an on-site installation plan and support the Head of the Production Unit with the production, installation, and technical support during the Urban Expo, including during the launch.
  • Contribute branding solutions, ideas, and micro-interactions throughout the WUF13 venue, including set/stage design, as required.
Qualifications/special skills
  • A Bachelor’s or a master's degree in graphic design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Architecture, or a related field is required.
  • Over 9 years of responsible experience in exhibition design for international events and conferences is required. Demonstrated expertise in exhibition and space design, including knowledge of exhibition construction methods and materials, is required.
  • Skill in three-dimensional exhibition design, including proven capability in the areas of design conceptualization, design development, and structural detailing techniques, sustainable fabrication processes and materials, model making, safety, conservation, and accessibility, is desirable.
  • Expert knowledge of applicable CAD software, 3D and graphic design software is desirable. Experience in data visualization, motion graphics and information design are advantageous is desirable.
Intern – Information TechnologyResponsibilitiesTechnical Support & Development The intern will:
  • Website application and development: assist with various stages of website development using established web technologies and frameworks including creating mock-ups and user flows.
  • Technical support: Provide technical support and support assist with planning, design, development and implementation of websites and application systems.
  • Thematic research: Conducting research on tools and best practices on new technologies relevant to the information systems field and assisting in the testing and evaluation of new products and tools.
  • Content management: Assist in updating the website and other tools such as the e-learning courses with new information and visual updates.
  • Testing and debugging: Assist in the testing of newly developed features to identify and troubleshoot minor bugs and enhance application quality.
  • Documentation and training: Assist in creating technical documentation for applications and training materials for tools in development.
Qualifications/special skills
  • Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher),
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent),
  • Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Preferred areas of study: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Web Development, Software Engineering or any other related fields.
